Side-on PMT's often demonstrate higher quantum efficiencies than head-on (end-on) PMT's having photocathodes of similar composition. Typical head on PMT's use a Box and Grid type dynode setup and can experience slow response time in some applications. Side-on PMT's are relatively low cost compared to head-on and are standard in photometrics.
