Conflat Flange (CF) Borosilicate Glass Adapter 1/4 inch to CF 1-1/3 inch, Schott 8250, Kovar

Conflat Flange (CF) Borosilicate Glass Adapter 1/4 inch to CF 1-1/3 inch, Schott 8250, Kovar to Stainless Steel Vacuum Fitting
For Connection Of Borosilicate Glass Components To Metal

These Borosilicate glass to Kovar Conflat adapter vacuum fittings have a flange size of ConFlat (CF) 1-1/3 inch to 1/4 inch Borosilicate glass. These ConFlat (CF) 1-1/3 inch to 1/4 inch tube Borosilicate glass adapters are used for sealing to Kovar metal or molybdenum and are commonly used in the following applications: for highly electrically insulation, transmitting tubes, image amplifier tubes, He-Ne-laser, clad tube for optical fibers, ozone generators, electroplated conductors entering glass envelopes, and other electronic parts, such as, vacuum tubes, valves, X-ray tubes and microwave tubes, and some lightbulbs. Kovar is a nickel–cobalt ferrous alloy compositionally, identical to Fernico 1, designed to have substantially the same thermal expansion characteristics as borosilicate glass (~5 × 10−6 /K between 30 and 200 °C, to ~10 × 10−6 /K at 800 °C) in order to allow a tight mechanical joint between the two materials over a range of temperatures.

Kovar was invented to meet the need for a reliable glass-to-metal seal, which is required in electronic devices such as light bulbs, vacuum tubes, cathode ray tubes, and in vacuum systems in chemistry and other scientific research. Most metals cannot seal to glass because their coefficient of thermal expansion is not the same as glass, so as the joint cools after fabrication the stresses due to the differential expansion rates of the glass and metal cause the joint to crack.

ConFlat (CF) flanges are used for ultra-high vacuum applications. These fittings use a copper gasket and knife-edge flanges to achieve the high vacuum seal and can operate down to 10-13 torr (10-11 Pa) and can be heated to 450 °C for bake-out. North American flange sizes are given by flange outer diameter in inches: 1-1/3 ("mini conflat"), 2¾, 4½, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13¼, 14 and 16½. In Europe and Asia, sizes are given by tube inner diameter in millimeters: DN16, DN40, DN63, DN100, DN160, DN200, DN250. These vacuum fittings are made of Borosilicate Schott 8250 glass sealed to Kovar metal which is welded to the corrosive resistant stainless steel vacuum fitting.
